Tongue infections are quite common because your mouth has a ton of bacteria. Make sure to keep it clean by using mouthwash without alcohol as an active ingredient. Biotene works wonders and actual tastes pretty good, it can be purchased at drug stores. Cost varies depending on where you live, but it can be a pretty expensive piercing when you factor in the jewelry. The swelling is by far the worst part of the healing process. I've had friends tongues swell to the point where they could barely speak or talked with a lisp. It may sound gross, but your tongue may swell to the point of double it's size which can leave indentations on the sides of it from your teeth. All in all, it's a quick healing piercing though, anything around your mouth usually is.
